Approach
A historically grounded, yet contemporary approach to the study & practice of flower essence therapy.
Our Educational Philosophy
We believe that flower essence education should be thoughtful and rigorous, but also engaging, beautiful, and alive. Our educational philosophy reflects how we believe this work is best studied, understood, and practiced. The six principles below provide the foundation for how we teach and learn across our programs.
A Historically Grounded, yet Contemporary Approach
The field of flower essence therapy has evolved and expanded considerably since its early development in the work of Dr. Edward Bach. Yet Bach’s system remains its historical and philosophical foundation. For this reason, we believe that an ideal flower essence education begins with a deep understanding of his work—including his life, discoveries, philosophy, materia medica, and methodologies.
This historical grounding helps us understand the continuing evolution and diverse landscape of contemporary flower essence practice. It also allows us to expand our materia medica seamlessly—moving beyond Bach’s 38 essences to explore the many flower essence collections and systems now available worldwide.
A Biological-Evolutionary, Psychological & Spiritual Perspective
Our approach to understanding mind and emotions is threefold: biological-evolutionary, psychological-developmental, and spiritual.
We begin with a biological-evolutionary understanding of emotions as embodied, adaptive responses rooted in our survival biology and mammalian nature. From this grounding, we explore the psychological and developmental dimensions of human experience, including emotional regulation, personality, patterns of adaptation, individuation, and self-actualization. Finally, we consider the spiritual dimensions of human experience, including questions of meaning, purpose, and transcendence.
This layered perspective allows us to bring greater depth and sophistication to Bach’s original insights, expressed through the language and understanding available to him nearly a century ago.
It also gives us a richer, contemporary framework for understanding our clients, their healing journeys, and the ways flower essences can support them.
A Deeper, 360-Degree Materia Medica
We approach materia medica as something to be explored in breadth and depth—rather than simply as lists of indications or personality types. We study the essences in a comparative and multidisciplinary way, approaching them from different perspectives. This includes observation of the plant as it exists in nature, botanical families and plant relationships, traditional and contemporary uses, the doctrine of signatures, culture and folklore, toxicology, and related herbal, gemmotherapy, and homeopathic remedies.
These different lenses enrich one another, allowing a more nuanced understanding of each essence to emerge. Rather than relying on fixed formulas, we learn to make connections, think expansively, and develop a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of flower essence materia medica.
Experiential & Embodied Learning
Flower essences are not learned through study alone. Direct experience is an essential part of coming to know them. By taking the essences ourselves, observing their effects, and engaging thoughtfully with what unfolds, we develop a kind of knowledge that cannot come from intellectual study.
This way of learning serves several purposes at once. We deepen our knowledge of the essences; we understand firsthand the healing process our clients may experience; and we engage in our own continuing growth and healing.
Learning the materia medica becomes an intellectual and an embodied process—deepening our understanding of the essences while contributing to our growth as human beings and practitioners.
Rational & Intuitive Approaches
Effective flower essence practice draws on more than one way of knowing. We make space for the rational and linear, as well as the non-rational, non-linear, and intuitive dimensions of this work. These different ways of knowing can deepen the way we perceive and understand the plants and essences, how we recognize what is asking to be healed in a client, and how we arrive at an essence selection.
Our approach cultivates an openness to these ways of knowing and to the distinct role each can play in practice.
Transforming Practitioner & Practice
One of our founding principles is: The practitioner is part of the practice. In fact, the practitioner is at the very center of the practice.
Our own wellbeing, self-awareness, and capacity for presence shape how we show up in our work with clients—how we listen, observe, understand, and respond.
So we begin with ourselves. We use the essences for our own healing, to support our wellbeing, cultivate awareness, and deepen presence. And as we develop personally, we expand the possibilities for what we can offer to our practice and to those we serve.
